Title: Families as Learning Partners - Involving children, parents, carers, and the wider community in the education of children with additional support needs.

Date: Tuesday 9 March 2010

Venue: Hamilton, South Lanarkshire

Who should attend: Parents and professionals

Chaired by Lorraine Sanda, Parental Involvement Co-ordinator at LTS.

About the conference:

Main topic: Involving children, parents, carers and the wider community in the education of children with additional support needs.

Parental rights are a key strand of the original 2004 Additional Support for Learning Act. This act was amended in 2009, strengthening the rights of parents and linking with the 2006 Parental Involvement legislation. This conference aims to look at the successes and challenges for parental involvement. How are parents being involved in decision making and learning for children with support needs? How can we support parents to become involved, particularly those parents with their own support needs? Does the focus on parental involvement mean that those children whose parents cannot or will not engage with the process receive any less support? How do schools and parents manage the transition to adult life?
